LUMS Faculty Member – Dr. Faisal Bari has been named a recipient of Pakistan’s Tamgha-i-Imtiaz civil award, recognizing his decades-long contribution to education, research, and public policy.

Dr. Faisal Bari, LUMS, has been named a recipient of the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz, one of Pakistan’s highest civilian honours, recognizing a career whose impact reaches far beyond the university classroom. The award was approved by the President as part of Pakistan’s 2026 Civil Awards, announced on Independence Day, with the formal investiture ceremony scheduled next year.

For more than two decades, Dr. Bari has worked across research, teaching, institutional leadership, and policy, contributing to Pakistan’s intellectual, educational, and development landscape through several major initiatives.

Academic Background

Dr. Bari holds a PhD in Economics from McGill University and an MPhil from the University of the Punjab. At LUMS, he has held key academic and research roles, including heading the Department of Economics and serving as a senior research fellow at the Mahbub-ul-Haq Centre for Research.

Where His Work Has Focused

Working at the intersection of research and public policy, Dr. Bari’s focus has centered on school assessment, teacher recruitment and retention, education reform, and public education financing in Pakistan.

As a member of the Punjab Examination Commission, he provided technical support to reform efforts aimed at strengthening formative assessment in schools. He has also worked on performance evaluation for education programmes in collaboration with the University of Cambridge, UK, focused on advancing inclusive education.

International and Policy Experience

Dr. Bari’s broader public policy work has included engagements with major international organizations, including the World Bank, UNDP, DFID, and the Asian Development Bank. His earlier research on social protection also contributed to the Benazir Income Support Programme.

A Public Voice on Education

Beyond his institutional work, Dr. Bari is a recognizable public intellectual, writing regular newspaper columns that bring economic and educational questions into national debate.

The Tamgha-i-Imtiaz reflects not just his standing as a university academic, but his broader role as a scholar whose career has been closely tied to research, education systems, and the progress of Pakistani society.
