Punjab’s Crime Control Department (CCD) has launched a province-wide crackdown against the sale, purchase and use of narcotics and other intoxicating substances, with a specific focus on drug activity near schools, colleges and other educational institutions.

The action was ordered by Additional Inspector General (AIG) CCD Punjab, Sohail Zafar Chattha, who has directed officials to enforce a zero-tolerance policy against drug-related activity across the province.

Emergency plan targets areas around schools and colleges

As part of the crackdown, the CCD has prepared an emergency action plan to prevent the sale and use of drugs in and around educational institutions. Under the plan, immediate legal action will be taken against drug dealers and suppliers found operating near schools, colleges, and other places of learning.

Authorities will also carry out regular monitoring around educational institutions to protect students from drug abuse. A CCD spokesperson said law enforcement agencies are actively targeting major drug networks and dealers across Punjab, not just individual peddlers operating near campuses.

Parents, teachers urged to stay alert

The CCD has urged parents and teachers to closely monitor children’s routines and stay alert to early signs of drug use, calling this a critical part of catching the problem before it escalates.

Citizens have also been asked to report anyone involved in the sale or supply of narcotics, with the department stressing that public cooperation will be essential to tackling the drug trade at its roots.

Penalties for drug trafficking

Punjab officials have reiterated that punishment for drug trafficking depends on the category and quantity of narcotics involved, and can range from long-term imprisonment to life imprisonment or, in the most severe cases, the death penalty. Drug offenders convicted under the relevant laws could face sentences of up to 25 years.
