India’s Education Minister Resigns After Mass Youth Protests Over Exam Leaks

India’s Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on Saturday following weeks of nationwide youth protests demanding accountability over a major exam paper leak scandal.

The protests, led by a youth movement calling itself the Cockroach Janta Party, centred on irregularities in the NEET-UG medical entrance examination held in May. Students had been calling for Pradhan’s resignation, compensation for families of students who died by suicide following the scandal, and a withdrawal of cases filed against protesters.

In a statement posted on X, Pradhan said he submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, citing the need to protect students from being caught in legal complications and to preserve national unity.

After a third round of talks with government ministers, the youth movement announced the government had accepted all their demands and called off the nationwide protests.

The resignation marks a significant victory for India’s Gen Z protesters, who have been staging some of the country’s largest youth-led demonstrations in recent years.
